Civic League to Help Merchants At a recent meting of the Civic Lea gue the memliers voted to assist the local merchants as far as possible in cutting down their expenses by carry ing home their bundles when possible, or when this is not practiceable, by or dering long enough in advance to en able to make reguler deliveries. Some of the merchants have been interview ed on thesubject and all agree that it would be. a great saving and conven ience to them and of ultimate benefit to the consumer. One grocer, for in stance, was -most enthusiastic, and said that if he could make only two deliveries-'-a day. one leaving the store at 0 a. m. and the other at " p. m. it would actually reduce the cost of merchandise. This is being done in most of the cities of the United states. -ami jui now -when all patriotic Americans are doing evevvthing in their power to con serve time ami effort and to reduce Jhe high cost of living it seems- a very small sacrifice to ask. C. King. Counsel for Means claim tllat they are vital to his adequate defense. It is umlcrstttod that they doubt that these papers have p.'uatly Jei -delivered into the bands "6f the" $1rYhCawTl cally Solicitor Clement and Attorney General Manning. They do not lielieve. at any rate that they hail ten turned over to the North Carolina state au thorities prior to the order requiring that they lo delivered to the Cabarrus authorities. An interesting story reached Char lotte Y-ednesday night through per sons from Concord who have been in close touch with the proceedings this week. It is given only -for what it is worth, and may or may not contain an element of truth. It is said that there is a strong llief in certain cir cles at Concord that the paper and documents allege I to have leen brought in the four trunks from New York by Assistant District Attorney Dooling have never lnen brouht to North Carolina at all. but that the four trunks contain only newspapers and photographic copies of the. pa pers in finest ion. It logins to a pi tear that a sort of "Who's got the thimble?" is ling plav ed. thus it appears, but appearance may ! deceptive. At any rate, it ai pears 'certain that Means and ,' those representing-him are not sure of the present wherealouts of all-iiniirtatit documents, and iossession of them i now the crux of the fight.
